Perfume Photography on a Black Background

Project Details

Client Context

An iconic house in niche perfumery, Serge Lutens is renowned for its radical aesthetics, captivating olfactory compositions, and a visual universe steeped in mystery. For the promotion of the perfume Borneo 1834, a packshot photoshoot was carried out, conceived as a tribute to the brand’s unique graphic identity.

Shooting Objectives

  • Create a product photograph that is both understated and luxurious, in line with Serge Lutens’ graphic DNA.
  • Work with lighting on a black background to highlight the architectural shapes of the bottle and the verticality of the logo.
  • Deliver an elegant visual output suitable for web, print, or press use.

Artistic Direction

Here, black is not a neutral background. It becomes a narrative element, a material in its own right that interacts with the glass texture and the play of reflections.
The lighting was designed to subtly reveal the bottle’s geometry without compromising its minimalism. Controlled contrast adds depth while preserving the silent, graphic spirit characteristic of Serge Lutens.

Result

An immersive image, designed to capture the essence of the perfume beyond its bottle. Far from conventional white-background packshots, this visual invites contemplation and interpretation, in a visual language consistent with the Lutens house.

Let’s discuss

Perfume photography is not just about showcasing a bottle: it must convey an emotion, an olfactory identity, and a brand universe. In the demanding world of luxury product photography, every detail matters, from the choice of background to the quality of reflections, and above all, the precise control of lighting. For this packshot of Serge Lutens’ Borneo 1834 perfume, the approach was decidedly aesthetic and graphic. Contrary to traditional white-background packshots, this visual immerses the bottle in a dark, elegant atmosphere, enhancing the sense of mystery and depth associated with the brand. Black-background photography, combined with subtle directional lighting, highlights the sculptural shape of the bottle and the characteristic verticality of its design. This type of high-end packshot requires perfect technical mastery: studio lighting, control of surface reflections, and discreet yet precise post-production. The goal is to produce an image that is faithful to the product while imbuing it with a sensory and emotional dimension. As a studio specializing in perfume bottle photography, we adapt our approach to the identity of each brand. Minimalist, editorial, narrative, or commercial: each photographic style serves a specific purpose, whether for digital communication, product sheets, or press launches.
